About Handel's Homemade Ice Cream
On a hot summer day in July of 1945, Alice Handel began serving ice cream in Youngstown, Ohio. With the finest ingredients, she made her ice cream one batch at a time, using personal recipes and fresh fruit from her garden. Today, over 75 years later, Alice's dedication to quality and service has remained the same. The Handel's way is to serve with a smile and always use the best ingredients in abundance. WE NEVER SKIMP!

American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

Austin is in Texas, in the South, where summers are hot and humid, winters are short, and severe storms in spring are a fact of life; businesses run air conditioning most of the year and many open early to beat the heat. Getting around Austin is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Texas's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

You pass by RM 620 enough times and you go “that Handel’s place–what’s that about?” Ice cream My Four Point friends. So what did I do to initiate myself in Handeldom? No I didn’t get the Graham Central Station flavour pictured. I got plain Jane Vanilla to see what Handel’s was about. So what did I think? You can tell it’s not manufactured from a machine. Whether that’s a good thing or not is what you will be paying for. Personally? If I was looking for ice cream with no ingredients to discern from the process, then the frozen section would not be too far–but Handel’s ain’t about that. So I finished vanilla and got one of Handel’s Pride and Joy, The Graham Central [Station] and let me tell you, even getting it small was a lot of ice cream, but again, because you’re out and about, you go big or go home. The Graham Central has clusters of chocolate covered honeycomb candy bits with a Graham flavoured ice cream base. One might say Handel’s has too much, or not enough flavours to choose from! But to the uninitiated, Graham Central Station, Buckeye, and a recommendation from The Owner (I think), Monkey Business. Handel’s of Four Points. Check It.

As a picky ice cream person, this is my absolute favorite!!!!! There has been no other ice cream shop that has surpassed Handels in my mind. Their ice cream is incredibly creamy and almost all of their flavors are rich. Except for vanilla based without another strong flavor. Their pricing is great for the amount you get as well typically. They also have speedy service.

As a leadership team for MomCo, we ordered 36 scoops of ice cream in 6 different flavors from Handel’s for our end-of-the-year celebration, and they were absolutely incredible to work with! The staff was so kind, accommodating, and helpful throughout the process. Every single flavor was delicious — rich, creamy, and a huge hit with all of our moms. Everyone kept talking about how amazing the ice cream tasted! Handel’s helped make our celebration extra special, and we’re so grateful for their excellent service and quality.

After Grandson’s band concert the kids and friends wanted ice cream and someone recommended Handel’s. There were probably 25 of us. When I saw only two people behind the counter I thought on no. From somewhere 2 more people show to help with the service we all got served amazingly fast. I had the Black Cherry in a waffle cone. It was Great. Everyone was pleased with what they got and the service. The playground was popular too.
